Unfortunately, there isn't a really good Free video format yet.  Ogg
Theora is probably the closest, but it won't even go alpha until
sometime this year.  mplayer (there's an apt source available at
http://marillat.free.fr/, it won't be entering Debian main any time
soon) can play most everything you throw at it, especially with the
'quicktime' and 'w32codecs' packages Christian has made (also at the site
above).  The format is certainly not Free, and while mplayer mostly is,
the w32codecs and quicktime plugins are certainly quite un-Free.
