If I'm just clogging my messages with *unnecessary* detail, please do let me know.) I've also been poking at the sound HOWTO here: http://www.djcj.org/LAU/guide/Sound-HOWTO-4.html#ss4.4 Which I realize dates from '99 and is not ALSA-specific... but I thought it might be of some help. One thing it said is to try "cat /dev/sndstat", so I did. That got me the response "no such device" which, according to the HOWTO, "means that sound driver is not loaded or linked into kernel." Um. Is this true? applicable in my case? any help? Thanks for the suggestions... Keep 'em coming! -Chris
