Own kernel doesn't work

I have following problem with my new kernel I compiled myself:

Making the kernel was perfectly ok:

I got the kernel-source-2.4.18.tar.bz2 with dselect, bunzip2ed it,
untared it.

I ran

make menuconfig
make dep
make clean
make modules
make modules_install
make bzlilo

it installed the kernel with the files vmlinuz and System.map in /.

Lilo was editet correctly, ( image=/vmlinuz & bla, old kernel named
to vmlinuz.old)

I ran lilo just to be sure...

And now the following happens:

Lilo starts with a message like

LILO2.2 Loading.........

And then the machine just reboots
No linux loaded, nothing
Just reboots.

If i make the old kernel as default again, it works perfectly - with
the old one.

I also tried and copied the new vmlinuz to /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18 and
the new /System.map to /boot/System.map-2.4.18 and made a new link
from /:
ln -s /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18 vmlinuz

But still the same problem

Can anyone give me a hint what I could try else?

Sloede
