Try this:
# apt-get install discover read-edid mdetect
# dpkg -P --force-depends xserver-xfree86 xfree86-common
# apt-get install xserver-xfree86 xfree86-common
# dpkg -plow xserver-xfree86

And let debconf both manage your XF86Confg-4 and try to detect your
hardware.
