Are there any error messages during init or in dmesg? Did you perhaps
forget to compile in support for some harddisk controller?

As long as you can boot into a "normal" system from floppy, you should
be fine. Have a close look at /etc/lilo.conf and check if it's correct.
Check if you have an initrd image if you need one. If everything seems
fine, run lilo.
