New kernel can't find map

Back to the trough again.  We have just recompiled the kernel to 2.4.20,
and we boot just fine.  But the first message in the kern.log file
says:  "Cannot find map file."  and then "No module symbols loaded."

The file "map" is in /boot, and the time of its creation seems to
correspond with when we run make modules-install.

Any ideas?
