have you tried with the debian make-kpkg program (it's in kernel-package)?
i find that make-kpkg makes it very difficult to install a half-compiled
kernel.

could you post the relevant errors to the list?

did you by any chance compile support for your southbridge as a module?
you shouldn't compile anything needed for booting as a module as
a general rule of thumb.  also, are you sure you're using your old
config as a starting point?  i recommend taking an old copy of your config
and loading that up in whatever make *config you use before configuring
anything else
