debian (sarge) machine to my cd burner.

You might like to consider 'partimage'. It creates a compressed bit-image snapshot of a partition, splitting its output into user-definable sized files (eg you could set 650Mb or 700Mb). You can then burn these files onto CD using your favourite burner software. Does not replace a daily or incremental backup, but great for peace of mind because you can easily restore a complete working system (with all your hard-won tweaks).

It must be run as root and has a nice intuitive ncurses interface. It cannot snapshot a mounted filesystem, so you need to set up a small second copy of Debian on a new partition and run it from there. You probably also need a new, larger partition on which to save the output files. Include this partition in the fstab of both copies of Debian.
