cdrom installation problem

I am trying to install debian 3.0 for the first time on an intel386 system from the cd images I burned. Unfortunately, debian can't see the files it needs on the cd even though I can see the files on any other computer. For example, it asks me to tell it where to find the file "Release" in order to install the base kernal. When I select the cdrom drive, I can see the directory structure on the debian cd including the directory which I know contains the Release file (which I checked on my other computer). When I select the proper directory, debian tells me it can't find the file. The only thing I can think of is that the directory names listed by debian on the cd are all cut down to 8 characters even though some of the directories it is looking for are more than 8. Is this some kind of cd format issue, or a bug?

Blaise
