gnome2 applets

ok, this sucks.

updgraded to gnome2 quite happily, everything is gorgeus except i can't 
use my applets:

specifically, netleds and wavelan.

they can't see a gnome panel.

do they NEED a gnome1 panel, or should this be fakable?
