It's also easy with lilo. In my lilo.conf I keep multiple entries:

* self-compiled newest kernel (2.14.18), 
* a recent debian kernel-image 
* the kernel from the base system
* windowz (Can't seem to get wine working for that one win app I need
for banking stuff) 

At boot time you can choose any one of them. And defaults to the first
one.
