try, downloading from http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/download.html

extract and do this..

JAVA_HOME=/path/to/extracted/java
CLASSPATH=/path/to/extracted/java/lib/dt.jar:/path/to/extracted/java/lib/too
ls.jar
TOMCAT_HOME=/path/to/tomcat
export JAVA_HOME
export CLASSPATH
export TOMCAT_HOME
