loadlin.exe doesn't accept linux kernel image

I am installing "compact" flavor of Debian to an Olivetti Echos P100D
laptop. I chose to boot the system from DOS partition. All the required
files are in c:\deb and the directory structure is correct. I have also
checked that c:\deb\compact\linux has a correct md5 checksum, so it
cannot be corrupted. When I invoke install.bat in directory
c:\deb\compact , it outputs as follows:

--output starts--
c:\deb\compact>install

c:\deb\compact>..\dosutils\loadlin linux root=/dev/ram
initrd=../images-1.44/compact/root.bin disksize=1.44 flavor=compact
LOADLIN v1.6 .......
not an Image file
Please enter name of kernel image file followed by optional .....
--output ends--

I copied the output by hand, so it isn't exactly identical, but still
shows the problem. What could be wrong?
