Kernel compile fails

Hi,

I downloaded the ac2 patch for the kernel 2.4.20 and applied the same.
The patch went smoothly without any errors, etc. To compile the kernel,
I did

   fakeroot make-kpkg kernel_image

After the checking of depends, the process fails with the following
error:

<snipped>
touch stamp-kernel-configure
touch stamp-configure
test -f stamp-configure || /usr/bin/make -f /usr/share/kernel-package/rules configure
/usr/bin/make    ARCH=i386 \

make: *** [stamp-build] Error 2

(Sorry for the long lines. I have pasted it as such so that the error
message appear as I got them.)

Has anyone else faced the same/similar problem?

Regards,
