At least two of the things you need to do are this:
1)make sure the module is loaded:
lsmod |grep emu
	if it isnt - then modprobe emu10k2
2) you need to "unmute" the sound channels
apt-get install rexima
rexima vol 100 pcm 100 cd 100

then try playing something (as root) of course, to see if it works
play /root/mysound.wav
