okay, i've gone thru XFree86 -configure xf86cfg xf86config and "startx" always borks out with errors. but after "xf86config" with a slew of textual q&a, i try XFree86 -xf86config /etc/X11/XF86Config i actually DO get a boilerplate background with the centered X (altho it's apparently oversized -- as if displaying 800x600 on a 640x480 close-up). i'm hoping someday soon i manage to get a window to display, even if it's an empty box.
