How to make a boot disk in debian?

Hi,

I am now trying to recompile kernel for the first time in Debian. I do not have a floppy to boot the system in case the kernel panics. How can I do that in Debian?

Looking at /etc/lilo.conf, it seems that I have to do, "dd if=/vmlinuz of=/dev/fd0 bs=8192". But it asks for root disk, please advise.

Damar
