sound with SiS 7012 and alsa

Hi, everyone -

I'm having some trouble getting sound to work on my system. The motherboard is an ABIT SR7-8X with what windows identifies as an SiS 7012 chipset (the motherboard manual calls it an AC'97 sound controller). Running kernel 2.4.19-686.

I first tried getting sound working just using the kernel drivers, so here are the sound-related modules I have loaded:

Module Size Used by Not tainted
i810_audio 20104 0 (unused)
sound 52172 0 (unused)
soundcore 3556 4 [i810_audio sound]
phonedev 2592 0 (unused)
ac97_codec 9576 0 [i810_audio]
ac97 2944 0 (unused)

Unfortunately, that didn't seem to work (as in kde complained about not being able to open /dev/dsp.) Next step was to use dselect to get the alsa drivers and try those. Here's my alsa config:

jeff@oddjob:/etc/alsa/modutils$ cat /etc/alsa/modutils/0.5

# --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
# --- ALSACONF verion 0.4.3b ---
alias char-major-116 snd
alias snd-card-0 snd-card-intel8x0
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
options snd snd_major=116 snd_cards_limit=1 snd_device_mode=0660 snd_device_gid=29 snd_device_uid=0 options snd-card-intel8x0 snd_index=0 snd_id=CARD_0 snd_pbk_frame_size=16 snd_cap_frame_size=16 snd_mic_frame_size=16
# --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---

Unfortunately, alsaconf and a manual start of /etc/init.d/alsa both report the same message:

jeff@oddjob:/usr/share/doc/alsaconf$ sudo /etc/init.d/alsa start
Starting ALSA sound driver (version 0.9.0rc5): no sound cards defined.

Any thoughts on what might be going on? I'll be happy to provide more info either via e-mail or via web site if it'll help.

thanks very much in advance,
Jeff
