As mentioned most laptops/hardware are supported by GNU/Linux. 
One item that is dissapearing from laptops is a real serial port.  I had 
to buy based on that feature, but most hardware I looked at was 
supported. 

BTW, I ended up with a Sony Vaio, mobile Athlon-Via chipset.
