Odd, works just fine here on over 20 machines.  Are you using the package
"cron" or something else?

In fact, the /n syntax is documented to WORK with the default cron

 Steps  are also
       permitted after an asterisk, so if you want to say ``every
       two hours'', just use ``*/2''.
