Huh.  My understanding is that putting that line in kernel-pkg.conf
has the exact same effect as specifying --rootcmd=fakeroot, so it
probably Just Worked.  You didn't happen to actually *be* root while
doing the kernel build, did you?  Actually being root obviates the
need for fakeroot, but is otherwise considered a poor idea.
