Run "esddsp saydate". This forces the program to use esd (Gnome's sound daemon) to play sounds. xmms has an esd output, so you should be able to use that. I believe there is a better-behaved version of esd out there somewhere, though. Either a later version, or a modified version, which releases /dev/dsp when it is not in use.
