Surely it is relatively easy to change the prompt to whatever is
desired. In root's .bashrc on this machine I have
export PS1='\h:\w\$ '
which gives what you suggest. The file dates from 1998 so I really
cannot recollect whether it came as the default prompt or it was put
there by me.
