looks like the easiest way is to

apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.18-686-smp

that will get  you SMP capable in the shortest amount of time.
You can also recompile your own kernel if you wish. I don't
see any prebuilt 2.2.x kernels for SMP ..though I prefer 2.2.19
on my systems.
