It has to do with the bytecode interpreter used for hinting TrueType
fonts.  The maintainter has apparently turned it back on in the latest
version in Sid (2.1.2-10), but it may disappear at some point in the
future.

The author confuses antialiasing and hinting, which does not give me
much confidence in the article.
