/sbin/ifconfig shows eth0, but not "RUNNING"?

I am trying to run a piece of software that apparently depends on a 
"RUNNING" message in ifconfig.

Notice how the loopback interface has "RUNNING" on it, whereas eth0 does 
not. It is the lack of RUNNING that is preventing the software I'm 
trying to run from loading. It claims that eth0 is NOT running, which, 
according to ifconfig, it isn't. What should I do?
