That doesn't quite answer Vineet's question. Is the touch pad physically broken (cracks, smoke wafting upwards from it, sparks shooting out when your fingers drift too near, etc), or is it merely not configured properly to work?

 the trackball is pu=luged into the usb port and the system looks to
/dev/gmpdata and i guess yes to the gmp question i'm not sure


Press "Ctrl-Alt-F1" to switch to the first virtual terminal and move the mouse. Do you see a white square mouse pointer moving around?

While there, do a "ps ax | grep [g]pm"; what's the result? If it lists something like:

 2135 ?        S      0:13 /usr/sbin/gpm -m /dev/psaux -t imps2 -r 25 -Rraw

then yes, you have gpm running.

In which case, get the white square mose pointer working first. Then worry about X.
