Re: FireWire harddrives

Hi,

Many thanks for the suggestions. The part about the initrd and modules
is especially valueable.

I haven't really devided yet what would be the best solution/product.
My main concern is to obtain around 200-250GB of storage space which is
as silent as possible!

I intend to use this on my home fileserver that runs on a Shuttle FV24
for which I plan to get a fanless mini ITX case.
Right now I have 3 80GB Seagate Barracuda IVs which are the quitest
drives I've ever had, but they are also running very hot. They also
do not fit into the mini case and draw to much power for it's PSU to
handle 3 of them.
The Shuttle board also has FireWire integrated (Lucent FW323),
hence the idea to use an external drive (or two).
It (they) would have an external power supply etc.

Now I would only need to know what would be the most silent solution.
I've seen a 250GB drive from LaCie which has the benefit that it
would only be a single drive thus hopefully more silent then having
multiple drives. Alternatively I've seen 120GB drives from several
manufacturers, so I could get two of those if they would promise
to be more silent then the LaCie...

Unfortunatelly, the specs for these drives are not really focused around
the noise levels they produce, or whether or not they have or require
fans in the enclosure.
The ideal solution would of curse be a drive that is relatively
quiet and does not require a fan.

As for the booting, my alternate plan is to get a Compact Flash to IDE
adapter and use the flash card to boot the system and then mount
everything from the FireWire drive(s)...

regards,
Balazs
