Nope.  Usually, when you see a virus scanner running on Linux, it's just
scanning for Windows viruses; i.e. it's a mailserver that scans incoming
attachments before they get to the lusers.  Unices aren't as susceptible
to virus outbreaks because of their multiuser nature, filesystem-level
access control, and (mostly) the smaller number of lusers.

You do mention that you plan for this machine to act as a mailserver, so
you might look into a scanner then that will help protect your Windows
machines.  There are other steps you should take to secure your
mailserver/gateway machine, but a virus scanner isn't necessarily one of
them.
