'/etc/init.d/networking restart' does something like this:
'ifdown -a; ifup -a'
executing this resets the TX/RX values
you could edit 'networking' to do something like
'ifconfig >$mylogdir/network-state-before-reset_`date +%F`;ifdown -a;ifup -a'
in order to prevent losing information
