I don't have the experience to help you with Woody yet, but I can tell you 
that Wonders 98 does not have proper support for USB. I had the same 
problem on w98 myself.

Wait, a thought. Did you install the 2.2.20 kernel? I think that does not have
USB compiled in. If so install 2.4.18 kernel.
