using adduser script & ldap

hi,

i'd like to know if it's possible to use the adduser script with a
ldap-server on woody.

i'd googled for a while and can't find anything usefull on that topic.
everything else seems to work (in fact everything that i have tested ;)
e.g. ssh, imap, su...) but i can't get adduser working

if i try

adduser test2

i get the following:

Adding user test2...
Adding new group test2 (1004).
Adding new user test2 (1004) with group test2.
Creating home directory /home/test2.
Copying files from /etc/skel
passwd: Permission denied
adduser: `passwd test2' returned error code 10. Aborting.
Cleaning up.
Removing directory `/home/test2'
Removing user `test2'.
Removing group `test2'.
groupdel: group test2 does not exist

while passwd seems to work properly as the user and as root.

any help appriciated.
