Check whether your shell initialization scripts work. Recently I screwed
up ~/.bash_profile by over-eager use of ssh-agent, and gdm exhibited
these symptoms.
Otherwise, see if there's anything interesting in /var/log/gdm/ or
/var/log/XFree86.*.log.
