or you could use PAM, I use PAM+LDAP (but PAM+anything would work), put
all the accounts in PAM and only configure the particular service to use
PAM. that is, configure /etc/pam.d/cyrus to use PAM, but not /etc/pam.d/login
or /etc/pam.d/ssh or /etc/pam.d/ftp or whatever ..
