cd writing and medium recognition

we have two IDE burners here, one LiteOn and one Plextor:

according to cdrecord (1.10-8):
  Vendor_info : 'LITE-ON '
  Identifikation : 'LTR-16102B '
  Revision : 'OS08'

  Vendor_info : 'PLEXTOR '
  Identifikation : 'CD-R PX-W4012A'
  Revision : '1.01'

Both identify the same medium differenly (LiteOn first, then Plextor):

  Indicated writing power: 5
* Disk sub type: Medium Type A, low Beta category (A-) (2)

  Indicated writing power: 4
* Disk sub type: Medium Type C, low Beta category (C-) (6)

Again, these are both done with *the same* medium.

The result is that audio CDs produced by the LiteOn cannot be played
back on our stereo, both producing the audio CD at speed 8:

cdrecord -v -dao defpregap=0 -eject -audio *.wav

I hypothesize that this is related to the indicated writing power. Is
there any way that I can influence this with cdrecord? The manpage
didn't tell me how. Maybe you know...

thanks,
