Loadlin un - broken. But network setup again?

Okay, this is just a confirmation that the latest loadlin WORKS
with BZ2 images.  

And I went ahead and installed the new kernel I had compiled -- but 
found that with the new kernel my network is not being recognized. 
Swap back to the Compact kernel, and it works. 

Under the new kernel, there is just no recognition of the network:  I
get 
ping returning a -1, when I try to ping my normal network connections.  
Loopback works, though. 

I cannot remember what configuration utility to use to set up the
network
again.  I went to LINUXCONFIG, and it wants to start up Apache, change 
everything around, and I don't think that that is kosher.  

So does anyone have a suggestion?  I also have X with KDE, if that
helps.
