DES to MD5 Password conversion?

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

Hello,

I installed my NIS server, believing DES was the only way to go, but
have discovered in the meantime that MD5 passwords are possible with NIS
if one rebuilds the database after every 'passwd' command (similar
scenario happend with shadowing, but I got that fixed on my own).

The question now arises: how do I change the password layout? I think I
am supposed to change the max. passwd-length in /elc/login.defs, but how
to cause a 'passwd' to create MD5- instead of DES-hashes is unclear to
me. Also - for normal user accounts I should be able to change the
passwords after the hash algorythm-choice switch as root, but how about
the root password itself?

Any hints are highly appreciated.
