ksymoops and make-kpkg kernel

I am trying to do a ksymoops on an ac kernel that has been giving me
oopses lately, but when I try to run ksymoops I get an error message
about vmlinuz and the system map not being in the right format. This
kernel was built with make-kpkg so I thought I should ask here first if
there would be any reason for this. Here is the first few lines of out
put of kysmoops:
ksymoops 2.4.6 on i686 2.4.20-pre1-ac1-shenson2. Options used
     -v /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20-pre2-ac6-shenson2 (specified)
     -K (specified)
     -L (specified)
     -O (specified)
     -m /boot/System.map-2.4.20-pre2-ac6 (specified)

/usr/bin/nm: /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20-pre2-ac6-shenson2: File format not
recognized
Error (pclose_local): read_nm_symbols pclose failed 0x100
Warning (read_vmlinux): no kernel symbols in vmlinux, is
/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20-pre2-ac6-shenson2 a valid vmlinux file?
Error (regular_file): read_system_map stat
/boot/System.map-2.4.20-pre2-ac6 failed
ksymoops: No such file or directory
Warning (merge_maps): no symbols in merged map

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.
