got a good point there. last january, i powered down a sun
ultra 10 which had a seagate IDE 10GB disk as it's root drive,
it was up for maybe 90 days, powered it off for about 10 minutes
to move it to a new UPS. the drive never powered up again. when
i turned it on, nothing happened, held the drive in my hands
and there was no vibration or sound..totally dead. I tried
some tricks I saw like putting the drive in a bag and putting
it the freezer for a few hours but that didn't do anything
either:( the drive was pretty new too.

about 4-5 months ago this 500day machine had some ide errors:
hdb: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hdb: dma_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=2638958,
sector=263880
8
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:45 (hdb), sector 2638808
hdb: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hdb: dma_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=2638958,
sector=26388

end_request: I/O error, dev 03:45 (hdb), sector 2638808

end_request: I/O error, dev 03:45 (hdb), sector 2638816

end_request: I/O error, dev 03:45 (hdb), sector 2638832

but as good as maxtor is(I have a 6GB and an 4GB in there,
both maxtor. the drives keep on chugging along, without a
single error since. So I kinda should expect the drives
will be dead by the time I finally turn it off :(
