Xfree86 and Knoppix
Hi folks,
I have a dual boot machine that runs primarily Windows, and Debian (version
Slink) boots from a floppy.
I could never get anything to run except Midnight Commander; then I bought
Bill McCarty's book "Learning Debian GNU / Linux".
So I decided to install Xfree86.
Big mistake. Xfree86 blocks access to all commands, and the only
command the machine understands now when running Debian, is the wall
switch for the electricity supply.
I had proposed to reformat all Debian virtual drives but I decided if I followed
that path I needed to back up all my valuable Windows - based material on
CDROM in case the reformat went horribly wrong - and I jib at the significant
expense of having a computer technician make that backup for me ( I cannot
do that myself).
My local Debian supplier in a recent newsletter advised me of a new Linux
distribution called "Knoppix" which runs hot from a CDROM, and it is less
than 20% of the cost of doing the full CDROM backup of my Windows
material. Knoppix has the ability to give me command-line access to my
Debian system despite the control that Xfree86 exerts.
In order to un-install / kill Xfree86, I need to know what files to knock out and
where they are.
Can somebody please help with information on vital Xfree86 files and their
location.
Sincerely,
Brian Swale
