I won't pretend to know what I'm talking about, just some idle thoughts.
I don't see any set-up for the bjc600.  What does the switch switch to?
lp sends raw data to the printer.  Try it with a text file.

There is no :if= (input filter) to route the file to gs or anywhere
else.  Another idle thought, is Potato using the same printcap?  What
does its printcap show?

BTW, I found Apsfilter to be nearly automatic to set up, combining lpr,
apsfilter, and gs.
