Dazzled by cursor

I've just installed kernel 2.2.20 (to replace 2.2.19).  I'm quite 
pleased with the penguin top left as it boots, and the 30-line 
display might be an improvement, but the over-bright cursor makes 
it extremely unpleasant to keep my eyes open in the same room as 
the computer.

I've an idea from something I read somewhere that this may be 
produced by the svgalibg1 package, but I can't find any 
documentation on it.  I found the /etc/console-tools configuration 
file, but everything was commented out.

Can someone tell me how I can tone down this monster?
