I still use xdm though not gdm. The old gdm in gnome1 had some outstanding 
bugs that drove me crazy. What's wrong with the new gdm? When does it 
freeze the system?

Which documentation is this? Take a look at the release notes[1], and
specifically the section on menu editing[2]. Looks like we might just
have to wait.

Also in [2] is a workaround for sawfish users who are pissed off about
loosing their viewports.
