I changed the /usr/src/linux/debian/rules file, added an environemt export,
and it worked. I'm not sure which of the two is the exact fix.
In the makefile: changed maintainer-John F. Davis
In the shell: export KPKG_MAINTAINER="John F. Davis"

Easy (at least for gnupg):
$ gpg --gen-key
and follow the prompts. AFAIR pgp has something similar. Check the
manpage.
