i believe vmware 3.0 defaults to using SCSI virtual disks instead
of IDE virtual disks, if for some reason your using SCSI virtual
disks and the controller is not detected, you may need another
boot disk. I helped a friend install debian 2.2 under vmware 3.0
on winXP a couple weeks ago and it went fine though the graphics
were slow as hell.

i would reccomend using a virtual IDE disk instead of a virtual
SCSI disk for installing, there should really be no difference,
and the IDe controller should be better supported for the install.

i believe vmware uses a symbios virtual scsi controller.
