I sorted it out finally (3 days later and 15 minutes after I post to a
mailing list, typical).  Basic procedure was to install oracle (8.1.7) as
per the docs, the db creation will fail.  Install the oracle glibc patch,
rerun dbassist to create the database, changing the SID but not the global
name.  DB creation will work.  Sometimes the install fails to start the
listener, but you can just do that manually.
