Apologies for the late response.

The Xlib error is, IIRC, pretty much standard for when X exits
unexpectedly.  A red herring.  I'd seen something similar with WDM
trying to do an inetd startup of VNC.

I'd strongly suspect a bad DIMM.  I'd try pulling RAM chips until the
problem goes away.  Then put the bad chip back in and run memtest86 on
it (available as a Debian package of the same name).
