Greg,
Thanks for that addition!! I had forgotten to add that a lot of cards - and
therefore, I assume, on-board audio systems have done away with power amps
and just give you a Line Out port.

Check the output ports on the soundcard/MB. In a recent switch of
soundcards here (from isa to pci) the 'speakers' port was not present,
just 'line-out' which requires amplification.
