what do you mean by "low"? low volume? did you adjust the volume via a
software mixer or by your loudspeakers?
the mixer device is auto-setup if you use ALSA. if you don't use ALSA
and use OSS instead you have to adjust your mixer settings before you
can seriously use your soundcard. be sure to check out if your player
have also an volume control (xmms does).
my favorite mixer is aumix. YMMV.
