Thanks for all the help everyone. I have come to the conclusion that the 
install iso I used did not have SMP compiled.
So now I am trying to get it compiled into 2.4.18, the iso I used was 
2.2.20, but am running into trouble when it tries
to compile the SCSI protion.

But that is another thread... :-)
